When Is Muharram

When is Muharram

Muharram comes as the first month in the Islamic calendar. It is regarded as one of the most important and sacred months of the Islamic year. Fighting is strictly prohibited during the holy month of Muharram. The Islamic Calendar is a lunar one unlike the Gregorian one and that makes the month of Muharram move from year to year.

Importance of Muharram

Most of the Sunni Muslims keep a fast during the days of Muharram. This is in honor of the Moses and his people who obtained victory over the Egyptian Pharaoh on the 10th day of Muharram. Prophet Muhammad had asked his disciples to keep fast on the day and even a day either before or after which marks the custom different from the Jews who keep a fast on the 10th day for the same reason. The Shia Muslims are more stringent in their attempts of observing Muharram by including acts of self-flagellation.
