When Is International Literacy Day

International Literacy Day was proclaimed on September 8th by UNESCO on November 17, 1965. To highlight the significance of literacy to people, communities and societies is the main aim of International Literacy Day. International Literacy day was first celebrated in 1966.

Why is International Literacy Day Celebrated?

International Literacy day is celebrated to raise awareness in public of the over-the top value of the written word and of the requirement to promote a literate society. The lowest regional adult literacy rate (58.6%) is in South and West Asia countries followed by sub-Saharan Africa (59.7%), and the Arab States (62.7%) according to UNESCO’s "Global Monitoring Report on Education for All (2008)”.
