US Government Scholarships for International Students

It has now become a reality that though there is funding for students, US Government scholarships for international students is restricted to a few students. Scholarships can be had through individual colleges which get grants from their alumni.  Large organizations do offer financial aid and scholarships and they are

  • The UN
  • The Red Cross
  • The WHO and
  • World Council of Churches.

Scholarships offered by any organization are sought by many and competition for these limited resources is pretty stiff. 

University Scholarships 

Universities do offer scholarships to deserving students – but this is available more for graduate students.  The criteria are

  • Good grades
  • Good exam scores

Fulbright Scholarships

Funds are made available only through this program by the US Government to International Students – for Master’s and PhD programs. They are also available for non-degree post graduate education.  Funds are administered through bi-national Fulbright Commissions and Embassies/Consulates in different countries.  Applications can be obtained through these offices and are also processed here.

  • Institutions Funds can be used to study at American Universities and colleges.
  • Fields Granted for studies in a variety of disciplines like performing arts, sciences, math, engineering and technology.  Applications are invited from students in all disciplines.
  • Number Awarded Only about 1800 grants are awarded annually to international students for pursuing higher studies in the United States.
  • Target Group Students from African countries, East Asia, Pacific Rim countries, Europe, South Asia and also South America.
  • Included in Scholarship Funds are awarded for duration of education to include stipend, tuition, textbooks, airfare and health insurance.
  • Eligibility Criteria Varies from country to country.  Check the website to get information for a specific country on eligibility requirements and guidelines to apply.

Conversely, a lot of scholarships are available to US citizens and permanent residents to go and study overseas in fields that are seen as critical to US development like languages.  There are several scholarships available to deserving students and you can find the right program to suit your needs.
