Academic Visa is a certificate issued by the UK missions abroad for candidates interested in taking participates in teaching or in clinical practice. A person who wants to do a research on a book can also apply for the academic visa. On the expiry of the visa they the person concerned have to leave the country because he/she has no rights to take up any kind of employment there.
A prospective candidate applying for Academic Visa must be either a doctor coming in UK to take part in teaching or for clinical practice. He must have to show the evidence of his job as an academic. He/She can apply for this visa if he/she is going to take part in the formal exchange arrangements. They should not get involved in any kind of activity apart from academic. Also, he/she must be able to convince the authorities that he would return to their country after completion of their duration and not take up a job in the UK. They should also have to show the proofs of the bank statements which states that they are not dependent on the UK resources.
For different categories the conditions of the UK academic visa must be different:
a) For Lecturers:
Persons who are coming to UK for giving lectures can apply for a work permit and if the persons are coming to attend the seminar or conference then they can go for an academic visa,
b) For sponsored researchers:
Persons who are coming to UK for sponsored research which is not necessarily funded by the UK institutions can apply for an academic visa but they should not fall in the category of visitors and business visitors.
Interested candidates can apply for an academic visa either through post, courier, in person or online. He can also collect the application form free of cost from Visa Application Centers (VAC) set up throughout the world to make it more convenient for people to apply for a UK visa. After the submission of the application form these VAC’s will forward this form to the UK mission in that country. UK mission will make a decision whether to give the visa.
Prospective candidates can be denied visa if they give wrong information, regarding the age proof or unable to deposit the necessary evidences. The prospective candidate can also be denied visa if they are unable to show the required liquid assets to fulfill their daily needs.
Normally, the duration of an academic visa is not more than 12 months. However, academic visa can be extended in cases where the prospective candidate wants to stay in the country after the completion of the event. For that, he has to apply for Further Leave to Remain (FLR).
After completion of the event, the prospective candidate can also apply for along term visa, which is issued for two years. Also, the candidate on an academic visa can prolong his stay in the country by applying for long term visa if he/she gets a specific job offer from a British company.
In addition, he/she can permanently stay in UK using Highly Skilled Migration program, which provides visas to professionals for four years. Highly Skilled Migration program is an open work permit where a prospective member can visit the UK several times.
