Summerfest synonymously known as “The Big Gig” is an annual music festival that takes place in Henry Maier Festival Park along Milwaukee lakefront in Wisconsin, United States. This fest is organized and run by a non-profit organization called Milwaukee World Festival featuring both local and national music talent from various music genres’.
Apart from featuring music, Summerfest also showcases a sample of delicious delicacies from the Milwaukee area restaurants. Other features of this feast cum fest include comedy acts, shopping vendors, fireworks, family attractions and much more.
Summerfest is a platform of performance of live musical shows on 11 stages from morning to midnight. The Marcus Amphitheater accommodates a capacity of 23,000 audiences along with free shows except for the admission ticket. Admission tickets are charged between US $8 and US $15 depending on the time of the day which also includes various other promotional offers on discounts or free tickets.

Initiated and conceptualized in 1960s by then mayor Henry W. Maier, this fest was an inspiration from Oktoberfest in Munich, Germany. He then planned a parallel themed festival for Milwaukee in 1962 by forming a panel of business and civic leaders by name “Milwaukee World Festival” which eventually changed to “Juli Spab” and later to “Summerfest”.
The first edition of Summerfest took place in 1968 in 35 various venues throughout Milwaukee and its events including a film festival, an air show and a pageant which was a huge success. Unlike the inaugural session, the second edition did not witness huge mass because of financial debts. Later, the organizers decided to fix a particular venue where Summerfest permanently moved to lakefront.
Many renowned personalities were associated with Summerfest few among which are Henry Jordan, Elizabeth “Bo” Black and others. The year 2007 marked the 40th anniversary of Summerfest; a notable feature of which was a documentary titled “Summerfest Stories” that went live on Milwaukee Public Television in June 2007.
