Self injury awareness day is observed on 1st March every year, around the world. Self injury means the people intentionally injure himself or herself physically to combat emotional stress. The different methods adopted by these people to deal with the emotional pain are cutting nerves, pulling hairs, burning, scratching, bruising, breaking bone etc.
The emotional pain from which these people are suffering is caused by issues such as low -self esteem, failure, love break-ups, abuse and perfectionism, trauma etc. A person going through such stress or overwhelming thought would tell nobody and find no other way to come out of it, rather then self injury or suicide. Physical injury provide comfort to them in different ways, it distracts them from emotional pain or disturbing thoughts, it gives them a sense of control or a way to express things which they can not express in words. It also helps them to gain attention of their near and dear ones.
Self injury awareness day is a campaign for encouraging awareness for self injury. Through this campaign people come together to provide awareness about self injury and help people to overcome their emotional pain. People whose lives have been affected by self injury give reports, fact-sheets and brochures to self injured people or to those who all are involved in their treatment. People are being educated how to attain happiness and to lead a normal life by indulging in different fruitful activities. Participants wear orange color ribbon or wristband on self injury awareness day to create self injury awareness to the masses.
