Even though the awards and scholarships are available mainly for the US nationals, there are still some scholarships for international students in USA. These opportunities are made available by those institutions that are looking for international flavor in their student population. However, it is hard to spot them as they are not widely advertised.

The scholarships for international students in USA are usually based on merit, country of the student, subject, etc. Most of the awards are merit based. USA Today awards “All USA College Academic Team” scholarship for an amount of $2500. You have to apply for this before the end of January. It is awarded to 20 students, who have excelled academically and in activities benefiting the society.

The Rotary Foundation’s “Academic Year Ambassadorial Scholarships” program offers a funding of $30,000 (max). The funding is made available through the local chapter of the Rotary club and the deadline varies with the club. The Rotary scholarships for international students in USA are available for vocational, graduate, and undergraduate studies.

American Association of University Women’s Fellowships are awarded for a maximum amount of $30,000. You have to apply for them by December 1. It is awarded to research or full time women international students.  The fellowship amounts are $18,000, $20,000 and $30,000 for Professional/ Master’s degree, Doctoral degree, and Postdoctoral degree respectively.

Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans has varied amounts of scholarships, and you have to apply by November 1. It is awarded based on a national competition conducted by the sponsor. The funding is made available as tuition and maintenance support for graduate students. The most recent fellowship limit of this sponsor is $90,000. However, to qualify the student must hold green card status, or be a naturalized citizen, or have parents who are naturalized citizens of the US.

Generally, international students seeking educational opportunities in the US need to prove that they have sufficient financial support to pay for their education in the US to obtain entry clearance.  Whether in the form of their own funds, loans or scholarships, they have to establish their financial stability.
