The San Marcos Fair is held in Aguascalientes annually. This festival gets over 200,000 visitors a year.
It is held in honor of the city’s patron saint, St. Mark. It is also known as “La Feria de San Marcos” and is a must visit event, especially if one is already in Mexico. This event started as a livestock fair in Aguascalientes from 1828. Wine is produced in this part of the country and the fair also revolved around the harvest.
This Fair is organized and governed by an independent foundation which sets the agenda every year. This foundation also gets a lot of support from the city and state governments to run the event.
Some of the highlights one can expect to see are:
This is a great way to see how the locals live. One can also sample some great food and also buy local arts and crafts.
Cock fighting and bullfights are the mainstays of the Fair – there are many other activities available for those not interested in watching these events.
The Fair also provides a grand state for well known Mexican singers to entertain the people after the cockfights. In fact, the musical line ups draw far larger crowds than the fight itself.
The Government also licenses a casino in Aguascalientes just for the season. The Fair is also well known for the cultural events that are hosted around this time. All in all, this is a great time to visit Mexico and experience its traditions.
