Record Store Day is an international celebration on third Saturday of April every year. Its purpose as expressed by Chris Brown an independent record store employee, is to celebrate the art of music. The day brings together artists, fans, and thousands of independent record stores around the world.
Record Store day was started in 2007 when over 700 independent stores in the USA came together to celebrate their unique culture. It is now celebrated internationally with over 1,000 independently owned record stores in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Italy, Ireland, Japan, Sweden, Germany, Norway and Netherlands together with artists to celebrate the art of music. They make special appearances and performances, they meet and greets with their fans, holding of art exhibits and in store quizzes and many other events are performed. Special vinyl and CD releases along with other promotional products to celebrate the occasion.
The aim of the Record Store day is to celebrate physical music with many special and limited-edition releases especially for the event. The fifth annual Record Store Day held on Saturday, 21st April, 2012. Iggy Pop was its official ambassador and over 400 different releases were made on this day.
Record Store Day will take place this year on Saturday 16th April, 2016. The official film of the Record Store Day 2013 is LAST SHOP STANDING- it is about the Rise, Fall and Rebirth of the Independent Record Shop. The movie is quiet inspiring which is based on a book by Graham Jones and directed by Pip Piper.
