The main aim of celebrating Rare Disease day is to raise the awareness among public about rare diseases and improve the health policies for those affected with various types. Every year on the last day of February month, thousands of patient groups and millions of affected people from all countries and regions participate in this awareness event. Many patient advocacy organizations for rare diseases like European organization for Rare Diseases (EURORDIS) and national organization for Rare Disorders (NORD) contribute their efforts to co-ordinate the activities and promote the day.
EURORDIS and its council of National Alliances launched the first Rare Disease Day on 29 February 2008 with an aim to spread the awareness across numerous countries and discuss the issues related to diagnosis, cure and rehabilitation. This campaign targeted mainly the general public and lead to the advancement of various national plans and policies for rare diseases in many countries. Even though the movement started in Europe first, it spread across world rapidly within a span of four years and it now includes almost 63 countries and thousands of organizations in the list.
No matter whether you are a rare disease patient or have a friend who suffers with life-threatening rare disease, it is important to show your solidarity and concern with rare disase patients around the world on this day. In fact, many patient organizations, health professionals and public authorities come together and organize health campaigns on Rare Disease Day to share and discuss the issues of patients. If you are really interested to support this event, you may attend the local or national meets or help to organize fundraisers or involve in the letter or email campaigning to spread the word etc.
