About Halloween
Halloween is celebrated every year on October 31st. This is one of the most exciting times when children and adults have lots of fun. According to the old custom, Halloween was celebrated to drive away evil spirits and curses. This occasion was also celebrated by the people from Celtic Ireland and was known as ‘’Samhain’’, which meant the Celtic New Year. It was a time when the harvest comes to an end.
Celebrating Halloween is incomplete without having the main ingredient; the Halloween pumpkin.Other than dressing up in scary costumes and masks, kids also come up with various pumpkin carving ideas. Many towns also hold pumpkin carving competitions. A few pumpkin carving ideas are below:
Pumpkin Carving Ideas
When it comes to carving pumpkins, there are many things that one can think of. Since Halloween is related to scary figures and masks, pumpkins can also be carved into these things. One of the easiest and simplest ways of carving pumpkins is to have a pattern ready. This makes it easy to get the exact image. For example you want a carving of a cat on the pumpkin: Follow these steps to get the desired pattern.
Step 1- The first thing is to cut the lid of the pumpkin in such a way so that you can put your hand in it and scoop it out. It’s better to scoop it out with a spoon. Also make sure the pumpkin seeds are completely taken out.
Step 2- After this, you need to scrape the inside of the pumpkin. Make sure the pumpkin is clean without seeds. Leave the inside with atleast 1’’ of thickness.
Step 3- Next, after the pumpkin is clean, take your pattern and stick it with a tape on the surface of the pumpkin. The image should be placed as flat as possible on the pumpkin.
Step 4- Make small holes around the pattern with a sharp knife or a toothpick. This would help in getting a neat image of the pattern on the pumpkin.
Step 5- Later cut along the pattern with a knife. It should be done gently and then with your fingers carefully take out the piece.
Step 6- To create a glow inside the pumpkin, light a candle inside it. The candle has to be placed at the base of the pumpkin. Once this is done, you are ready to display the pumpkin.
Other than this, there are other pumpkin carving ideas like carving bats, making monster faces, carving tiny spiders, freaky faces, carving out the popular Jack o Lantern and Frankenstein.
You can also get pumpkin patterns in readymade carved designs. Many people love using the traditional patterns or monograms. Other than using candles, you can also use bulbs to light the inside of the pumpkin. Make sure the bulb is not very bright rather a dim one would do.
Pumpkins can also be decorated with colored papers. Usually knives and spoons are the main carving equipments used in cutting and scooping the pumpkin for Halloween.
