Biography :

  • The youngest of the three children, Pope John Paul II was born in Poland.
  • After the death of his mother and brother, Pope John Paul II took admission in Jagiellonian University where he mastered twelve languages apart from taking an active part as a playwright in theatrical groups.
  • When Pope John Paul II met with an accident, the incident made him a firm believer of the fact that he was chosen to be a priest.

Career :

  • Pope John Paul II became a priest in 1946 and left for Rome to study theology at the Pontifical international Athenaeum Angelicum.
  • After completing his education and receiving a licentiate, Pope John Paul II went back to Poland.
  • While teaching at the Jagiellonian University and the Catholic University of Lublin, Pope John Paul II gathered a group of twenty people that eventually expanded to two hundred people. The group gathered together for prayers, discussions on philosophy and to help the blind and sick.
  • A keen learner, Pope John Paul II completed his second doctorate in philosophy. Very soon he started writing for the newspaper, Universal Weekly.
  • Through his poems and plays, Pope John Paul II wrote about the contemporary issues of the Church, war and the impact of communism on the ordinary people.
  • Pope John Paul II, however, used different pen names while writing on non-religious themes so that his name and fame did not influence the publication of his articles.
  • Pope John Paul II authored the book, “Love and Responsibility”, in which he justified the conventional Church’s sayings on marriage from a philosophical viewpoint.
  • As the Bishop of Rome, Pope John Paul II began travelling to many countries which accounted for his increasing popularity.
  • Pope John Paul II was the called the “Pilgrim pope” owing to his large travelling record.

Achievements:

  • As an important influential religious leader, Pope John Paul II was instrumental in bettering relations between Catholicism and Islam and Catholicism and Judaism.
  • He is also remembered as he was the first Pope to visit a Nazi concentration camp in Poland and asked for forgiveness.
