PMP stands for “Project Management Professional” ,it is a credential offered by the “Project Management Institute” (PMI). The PMP tends to acquire details to find out whether the test-takers has the experience and academic backing to lead projects. The PMP exam can be either given as a computer based test or a paer based test as well. The location of the test can however determined by “Prometric” a global network testing center.
The structure of the exam is around 200 multiple choice questions out of which 25 of them are not included in the scoring since they are pre released.
Candidates must verify a high school diploma or an associates degree with 60 months of project management experience, or a bachelor’s degree with 36 months) of project management experience. Either way the test-takers must also have 35 contact hours of project management education. The application for the exam and verification of education and experience are done online at the PMI website.
The following requirements are needed to take a PMP Test.
A four-year degree in bachelor’s or the global equivalent and at least three years of project management experience, with 4,500 hours leading and directing projects and 35 hours of project management education.

A secondary diploma in high school or the global equivalent with at least five years of project management experience, with 7,500 hours leading and directing projects and 35 hours of project management education.
Each exam question has at least two references to standard books or other sources of project management. Most of the questions reference the PMI “A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge” also known as the “PMBOK” Guide. Other Materials consist of “Andy Crowe:The PMP Exam: How to Pass On Your First Try", “Kim Heldman: PMP Project Management Professional Exam”.

There are two ways to apply for the PMP examination. There is an online application on the PMI website and even a paper copy of the application in the PMP Credential Handbook, which can also be found on the PMI website in a printable form. To apply for the PMP test online one has to register and log in to the PMI system.
Once an applicant has applied to take the PMP examination upon being selected they will receive an electronic authorization to test (ATT) letter. This letter has information on exam scheduling. There is no specific calendar for a PMP exam. To schedule an exam, test-takers must go to the Prometric website to select a test date and a location for the test. The PMP exam is offered during normal business hours Monday through Saturday. . It is recommended to schedule an exam six weeks before the preferred test date.
Candidates who take the computer-based test receive their results immediately upon completion whereas candidates who take paper-based tests receive their test results typically within 4 weeks.
