Oscar Arias Sanchez Biography

Oscar Arias Sanchez served as the president of Costa Rica twice. He has been awarded with the prestigious Nobel Peace Prize in lieu of his peaceful intervention in the civil wars of the Central American countries.

Biography :

  • Oscar Arias was born in an upper class family and completed his schooling in San Jose.
  • Even though Oscar Arias wanted to pursue his studies in medicine, he went on to complete his education in law, economics and political science from leading educational colleges.

Career :

  • Oscar Arias’s political career began when he joined the National Liberation Party of Costa Rica.
  • Sanchez then contested for the post of the president and he won the elections. He then brought about a series of changes in the economy of Costa Rica like emphasis on non-conventional agriculture, transforming the educational system in favor of standardized academic tests.
  • Oscar Arias is also known for extending his whole-hearted support in ending internal conflicts in the Latin American countries and promoting peace. He played a pivotal role in the signing of the Esquipulas II Accords. His work earned him the Nobel Peace Prize.
  • Oscar Arias played a significant role in amending the Constitution of Costa Rica that did not allow Presidents to be reelected. Even though the Supreme Court did not accept his plea, Oscar won the Presidential elections for a second time in 2006.
  • Oscar Arias is also credited to bringing about unity in the Central American area by supervising the formation of the Central American Parliament.
  • He also donated the Nobel Peace Prize money towards instituting the Arias Foundation for Peace and Human Progress that aims at providing equal opportunities to women and resolving conflicts in the developing countries.
  • Oscar Arias has also been the mediator in the Constitutional crisis of the Honduras where peace talks were held between the representatives of the two Honduran countries. However, the talks have so far been unsuccessful.

Achievements :

  • Oscar Arias Sanchez has been awarded more than fifty honorary degrees from various world famous universities like Harvard, Princeton, Dartmouth and the like.
  • He received the prestigious Albert Schweitzer Prize for Humanitarianism.
  • Oscar Arias was one of the elected Board of Directors of the International Criminal Court’s Trust Fund for victims.
  • Oscar Arias is also an active member of the international organization, Collegium International that consists of leaders from all over the world and works towards the establishment of a peaceful, egalitarian and developed world.
