National Pears Helene Day 2015

15th of March is celebrated as National Pears Helene Day. This day is marked to enjoy a very smooth French dessert.

The exquisite dessert is also known as Heleneor belle Helene. This mouthwatering dessert was first made in 1870 by a famous chef named Auguste Escoffier. The dessert consists of pear which is poached in vanilla flavored sugar syrup. This is also combined with vanilla ice-cream and is glazed with hot chocolate sauce. The pear has to be chilled.

But, there are various recipes for this dish famous throughout the world. Some recipes have toppings of crystallized violets and sliced almonds, some others have cinnamon and whipped cream. The toppings can vary but the main ingredients like pear, vanilla icecream, and chocolate syrup remain intact.

The dessert got its name from the operetta La belle Helene by Jacques Offenbach.

In the United States, pears are the third most important fruit crop after apples and peaches. Pears are also the least allergic among all the fruits.
