A very tasty dish, the strudel can be savory or sweet. The apple strudel is the most common and well known strudel and is served with toppings like ice-cream (Usually vanilla), custard, whipped cream or vanilla sauce. The Apple Strudel has the honor of being the National Dish of Vienna. Making an apple strudel, particularly the thin pastry is not an easy task. Yet everyone should attempt the task at least once, if only to have a good laugh at the results. Apple strudel lovers claim that every day should be celebrated as Apple Strudel Day although the origin of the day is unknown.!
High on the list of comfort foods the apple strudel is a gourmet delight. The strudel boasts of layers of thin and crisp pastry, that hides a center of raisins, cinnamons and of course apples. Strudel is usually oven baked, sliced, sprinkled with powdered sugar and served warm. Apple Strudel Day seems a strange holiday to celebrate. In fact, hearing about this holiday the first questions that would come up in your mind would be what is the importance of the day and how to celebrate the day. Not much can be said regarding the origin of the day either.
Historically, there is no importance of the day. Nor, there are any rules on how to celebrate the day. “Strudel” is a German word that means ”Vortex”. The dish seems to have been named for the many layers of pastry that surround the filling. The oldest recipe for the dish was handwritten in the year 1696 and seems to have originated in Austria. The author of the recipe and the creator of the dish are, however, still unknown. Recreating the traditional dish is not an easy task, although the modern versions of the dish seem relatively easier to execute.
Celebrated on 17th June, Apple Strudel Day could easily make it to the list of absurd and weird holidays. The easiest and most obvious method of celebrating the Apple Strudel Day is to bake the dish and share it with family and friends. Absurd activities to celebrate the day include decorating the house with scented candles that smell of Apple Strudel. Simpler fun activities would be seen, who can bake the tastiest Strudel, or eat the most Strudel in a very short time period.
Planning activities for this funny national holiday should not be a difficult task. The Apple Strudel is known as ‘Apfelstrudel’ in German. Try driving down to a German bakery and buy the dish while talking only in German. The first one back with the strudel wins the competition. Have an apple picking competition or an apple eating competition. You could even have an apple cutting competition just for the fun of it. Just bear in mind that all activities should revolve around the central theme –apples!
