Mary Baker Eddy was a known and most prominent spiritual leader and writer. Mary was the founder of Christian Science Movement. It was her belief that Christian Science is the only way to bring spirituality in practical solutions for human health as well as for the moral issues. Mary Baker Eddy is also popular for her spiritual teachings, lectures and instantaneous healing abilities. Eddy’s writings still has a hold and influence in the world.

Birth Details & Personal Biography

Mary Baker Eddy was born on July 16th, 1821 in New Hampshire. Eddy was the sixth child of Abigail and Mark Baker and her parents were Congregationalist. Unlike her family Mary never believed in predestination and original sin. There were huge restrictions on women’s education at Eddy’s time thus Mary received much of her teaching from her brother Albert at home. At a very early age Eddy discovered that by treating sick people one can be an integral part of Christian Service. Mary faced tragedy at a very tender age. At the age of 20 she lost her brother Albert and when she turned 22 Mary lost her husband George Glover whom she married just six months before. Mary had a hard time as a widow and a single mother. Soon in 1849 she lost her mother. With a hope in her heart Mary got married again for a stable life but however this time also no luck for her and Mary got divorced.

Career :

In the early stage Mary worked as a writer of political pieces and as a substitute teacher. Later in 1875 Mary’s book Science and Health was published which was based on the theology and healing system of Christian Science. In 1879 she served as a Pastor in a church which was founded by Mary itself. In 1881 she founded a college and became a lecturer over there. Mary taught people the system of healing. In 1883 Mary started publishing a monthly magazine and became its editor. In 1898 Mary formed a publishing company and started a weekly magazine.

  • In 2002 in the name of Mary Baker Eddy Library for Betterment of Humanity was opened for public.
  • Mary is also recognized as a Christian religious reformer.
  • Mary was the founder of a religious domination Christian Science.
