In 1872 Rex is the official Mardi Gras colors. The Rex Parade >theme Colors has representation meaning to the colors: gold, power, green, faith, purple represents justice.
Its note that Mardi Gras colors subjective schools like arch rivals Tulane University, Louisiana State University.
For the Mardi Gras season LSU was choosing on its colors, the shops in New Orleans had choose the purple, green, and gold material. LSU has chosen upon purple and gold, and bought much of it. Tulane bought has chosen remaining color green (Their colors are blue and green.)
