The origin of the Loving Day

Before 1967, interracial marriage was illegal in 16 states of United States. Mildred Jeter, a black, and Richard Loving, a white, loved each other and got married in Washington in 1958. They were arrested on the crime of interracial marriage after returning to the home town in Virginia. Getting sentenced for one to three years of jail term, the couple was given a choice to choose between leaving the State for twenty five years and to be in the jail. The couple has chosen the prior option and moved to Washington.

Though their marriage was considered as legal in Washington, the racial discrimination around them at every aspect troubled the couple. Being exhausted, Mildred wrote a letter to Robert F. Kennedy that helped to put up the issue before the Supreme Court of United States. The verdict allowed the couple to live legally in their home town. The victory helped not only to Loving family but also to many others those are suffering from the racial discrimination. Thus, the marriage anniversary day of Lovings, June 12th, is celebrated as Loving Day, paying the tribute to the couple for playing a major role in the fight to win civil rights as well as for their intense love that remained undefeatable.

The day is rather important to many to make others realize that everyone has equal right in the society to enjoy the rights and there is no space to racism in law.
