Customaries of celebration

Beyond this religious celebration, many customaries are involved which also compliment the celebration of midsummer, which are known to be the midsummer festivals of pre-Christian pagan This festival takes place almost during the same period. During the time of seventh century, Saint Eligius asked the new converter to avoid the midsummer festival and to adopt the customaries of St. John the Baptist’s birth celebration

Date Confusion
  • Now it is evident from the date of celebration that Feast of John the Baptist is held on 24th June which is six months and one day before the Christmas.
  • Then it is also claimed why the celebration is not on 25th June, just six months before the Christmas.
  • Thus, sometimes it is said that Church Authorities was in a mood to convert the pagan celebration of solstice into Christian celebration. Due to this, Saint John's feast is celebrated beforehand in order to substitute the former pagan festival.
  • But later on, this decision was found to be taken mistakenly during that time.
  • With more clarity, solstice was started being celebrated at the mid of the June and this happened due to the inappropriateness of the Julian calendar.
  • Then according to the Gregorian calendar, during the time of 1582, solstice took place on 23rd June.
  • Thus, it is said that the reason for celebrating this festival on 24th June due to the counting in roman method
  • Christmas was celebrated on the 8th day before the first day (Kalends) of January.
  • In the same way, Feast of John the Baptist used to be celebrated on the 8th day before the first day of the July.
  • But according to the Germanic way of counting, month of June consists of 30 days, thus Feast of John the Baptist is celebrated on 24th June.
  • Again according to the Armenian Apostolic Church, Feast Of John the Baptist is celebrated on 15th January.
  • Here the celebration is concerned with the nativity as well as the Baptism of Christ

EVENTS: International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression, Celebrations, Awareness, Future Steps for Childrens.

When International Day of Innocent Children Victims is celebrated?

During the year of 1982, 4th June of every year was declared as International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression by United Nations General Assembly

Why International Day of Innocent Children Victims is celebrated?

•It was celebrated to fulfill the purpose of providing better place for the children victimized for mental, emotional and physical abuse.
•It is celebrated to make people aware of the fact that right for those victimized children should be protected
•Various non-governmental and government organizations take place for this celebration such as :
•United Nations Children's Fund(Unicef) ,
•The Global Movement for Children, with leadership from Nelson Mandela and Graca Machel,
•The 'Say Yes for Children' campaign. This revolutionary campaign was supported by more than 94 million supporters.

Statistics describing condition of children all over the world. Commemorating the day is as relevant now as it was then.

Victimized children by the act of child abuse though are not much superficial but it is looming large in the society day by day.

•As UNICEF states, "Violence cuts across all social, cultural, religious and ethnic lines. This kind of abuse can raise its head anywhere like in school, home, streets."
•Globally, there are 11 to 17 million people who are refugees.
•Of these, 41 per cent are believed to be children and 26 per cent women.
•Global estimates of internally displaced persons range between 16 million and 25 million, with an average estimate of 24.5 million internally displaced persons worldwide.
•Displaced children and adolescents are particularly vulnerable to violence, sexual exploitation, HIV infection, forced labor and slavery, and they risk being forcibly recruited by armed groups.
•Statistics of the last decade show the pathetic fact of killing over two million children due to conflict.
•Moreover, nearly 6 million children are being wounded along with 1million being orphaned.
•Near 20 millions of children have had to flee their homes due to the wars.
•Children in 87 countries live among 60 million land mines.
•Victimized as a mine labor with annual figure of near about 10,000
•Over 300,000 young boys and girls are appointed to work as child soldiers throughout the globe. Many of them are below the age of 10 years. Lots of young girls are compelled to several types of sexual harassment.
•Almost 30,000 children die every day from the side-effects of violence, such as the aforementioned poverty, hunger and preventable diseases etc
•AIDS by itself has killed more than 3.8 million children and orphaned another 13 million. In the last five years HIV/AIDS has become the greatest threat to children, especially in countries ravaged by war.
•In highly affected countries, figure shows that nearly half of today's 15-year-olds is estimated to die.
•According to the world statistics, near about 1.2 billion human race make their survival even below one dollar per day basis. Here, in this count half of the share is children.
•Ten million children under the age of five die each year, the majority from preventable diseases and malnutrition.
•According to the world statistics, annually near about four million children are not getting the opportunity for birth registration, which is making them deprived from the legal identity and nationality
•Approximately 250 million children, especially girls, from age five to fourteen, are forced to work.

Awareness attempt

•The awareness of this reality called for urgent steps to change the current state of things for the better.
•One of the principal landmarks came in 1989, when the UN General Assembly adopted “the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC)”.
•This was soon followed, in 1990, by the remarkable World Summit for Children, at which 159 Heads of State and Government and other high-level representatives proclaimed that 'there can be no task nobler than giving every child a better future'.

Step towards better future

•Like parental care and support, the governments at the Summit promised that they would always act in the 'best interests of the child' and ensure that children would have 'first call' on all resources.
•To put these promises into effect they established a Plan of Action incorporating 27 specific goals relating to children's survival, health, nutrition, education and protection.
•This focus on children continued.
•Ten years later, in 2000, the world's leaders met and signed the Millennium Declaration, pledging 'to free our fellow men, women and children from the abject and dehumanizing conditions of extreme poverty'.
•After that incident, they had made a commitment of different targets which made its identity with the name of Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). These all series were meant for children welfare and rights protection for them
•To make its foundation much stronger, these series of commitments were re-established in the month of May of 2002.In this act, the General Assembly dedicated all its 27th Special Session, especially for children, which paved the way of rewinding the progress from the summit of the year 1990.
•While acknowledging many achievements, they concluded that they were still falling short.
•They adopted a Declaration committing them to seizing 'this historic opportunity to change the world for children'.
•The resulting plan of action aimed to create a world fit for children, one in which all children get the best possible start in life.
•The plan emphasized that families, the basic units of society, have the primary responsibility, and that they and other caregivers should have the appropriate support so they can enable children to grow in a safe and stable environment.
•With the plan, governments committed to a time bound set of specific goals, strategies and actions in four priority areas:
•Promoting healthy lives;
•providing quality education;
•protecting against abuse, exploitation and
•violence
•combating HIV and AIDS.

Sewing Machine day

•Nowadays, the world of fashion has reached the peak with the effort of new design, style and contour of clothes.
•But if the entire range of different collection we had to develop by hand woven garbs.
•Sewing machine being the first invention paved the way to build huge textile unit and industries.
•Thus, we can not forget and deny the contribution of sewing machine in our life.

Why is Sewing Machine Day celebrated?

•Sewing Machine day is celebrated to pay honor to one of the greatest invention of the human.
•Sewing Machine day is known that food, shelter and cloth are three basic needs of human kind.
•Invention of sewing machine has solved one of the prioritized needs of human being, i.e.. cloth.

When is it celebrated?

•It is celebrated either on 13th June or 10th September every year.

What is sewing machine?

•Sewing Machine day is mechanical (or electromechanical) machine to join fabric with the use of different types of thread.
•Stitches made by sewing machine are known as sewing-machine stitch.
•It generally uses two different threads.
•Few machines can use more threads for stitching.

Importance of Sewing machine

•Sewing machines give us wide variety of plain or patterned stitches in any kind of clothe to make it more appealing.
•Sewing machines have different units for gripping, supporting, and conveying the fabric to the sewing needle in order to form the stitch pattern.
•Few kinds of sewing machines can create embroidery-stitches, which is very famous all over the world.
•Various sewing machines for domestic use and even big industrial machines also use two thread stitches which are known as lockstitch.

History of Sewing Machine

•The initiation at mechanical sewing machine was taken place by Charles Fredrick Wiesenthal.
•He was from German and was serving in England
•He got the honor of British Patent No. 701 in the year 1755 for the invention of double pointed needle which has an eye at one end.
•This needle was so designed that it was able to go through the cloth with the aid of a pair of mechanical fingers, so that it could be grasped on the other side by a second pair.

•Since the thread and the needle, passed through the fabric, therefore, it was mandatory to keep the thread short,
•Obviously, it was required regular halt in order to make the supply anew.
•After that, various efforts took place to evolve the structure and utility of a sewing machine.
•Several patents also awarded from the time frame of 1795 to 1830. But the entire attempt was in vain.
•Then one French tailor named Barthelemy Thimonnier took revolutionary step.
•His invention of sewing machine which was powered by foot pedal took a new shape of the device.
•This machine used to form chain stitch by holding cloth together.
•Thimonnier got the honor of French patent in the year 1830
•Eighty machines of his invented pattern were taken by a factory located in Paris
•Those machines were required to stitch clothes for Soldiers.
•But other tailors becoming green-eyed to the new invention and with the fear of losing livelihood attacked the factory and destroyed those machines.
•Then during 1834, Walter Hunt restatred the lock stitch
•This stitch was found to be stronger and best suited for machine production.
•This kind of stitch is done by two different threads intersecting two layers of fabric.
•It makes a stitch which gives the impression of same kind of fabric from the both side.
•But Hunt found it monotonous and he sold his machine without considering the matter of patenting it.

•Elias Howe had done patent to his machine in the year 1846.
•He adopted the same method like Hunt,
•But he placed fabric vertically.
•He then took a lengthy attempt in England in order to drag the interest of the public towards his machine.
•When he came back to America, he found that his patented machine was being invalidated by the people.
•He returned to America to find various people refusing his patent.
•Then after a long attempt, he fortunately gained the honor of being the right person to be claimed royalties from the manufacturing units in the year 1854 for his patented machine.

•Isaac Merritt Singer was another revolutionist in the evolution of sewing machine.
•He captured the glance of a rotary sewing machine which was getting repaired in a Boston shop, which he found lacking good design.
•This machine was the compilation of elements of Thimonnier’s, Hunts and Howe’s machines.
•In the year 1851, he applied for the American patent.
•Sewing Machine day was heard that he patented foot pedal (or Treadle) which uses to power some of his machines.
•Howe came to know about Singer’s machine.
•Singer was taken to the court.
•Howe won the case and Singer being by the laws gave lump sum payment for all machines already produced.
•Singer then arranged license under Howe’s patent
•Then he made the payment of $15 per machine.
•Singer got associated with lawyer, Edward Clark as a partner.
•Both of them formed the first hire-purchase scheme in order to make machines affordable to any people.
•During the time frame of 1850 various companies were being established.
•They tried to sue each other in those issues.
•Then the revolutionary step was taken by James Edward Allen Gibbs who was a farmer from Raphine in Rockbridge County of Virginia
•It was the day of 2nd June of the year 1857; he was the first one to patent chain-stitch single-thread sewing machine.
•In association with James Wilcox, Gibbs started heading the Wilcox & Gibbs Sewing Machine Company which is still running strong in the market.

Modern Sewing Machine

•Nowadays, machines are operated by computers
•Modern machines use stepper motors or sequential cams in order to reach different difficult patterns and designs.

Celebration of Sewing Machine day

•This specialized sewing day can be celebrated by different activities like greeting people with cards flowers and other gifts.
•But best gift to celebrate this day is by gifting your beloved with a fully-loaded sewing machine.

•Hu joined the children in playing with toy bricks at the kindergarten and played basketball and rope skipping with students at the school.

Recognition of International Children’s Day

•Despite of the prominence that International children's day gets in nations like China and Poland, it practically remains an arcane in the majority of nations of the world.
•However, what demarcates it from other public holidays is the hope that it sheds over the future of children, the architects of tomorrow, especially those thriving for "just existence" in the underdeveloped world.
•The participation of agencies like UNICEF, G8 and other charitable organizations makes it an endeavor that is a giant leap towards peace and unification of humanity giving all those involved in the process that the world is ONE FAMILY.
