John Wesley Powell

John Wesley Powell was born on 24th march 1834. And he was remembered as the explorer of the American west. Along with being an explorer he served the army and he was also a well-known geologist of his times. In the year 1934 Powell got birth in the mount Morris New York. His father named Joseph and mother named Mary. His father was an emigrant from England and he served as a poor preacher in the country.

His family kept on moving from one place to another place so little Powell took his education from different colleges of America. He studied at the Illinois College, Wheaton College and Oberlin College. From childhood he has deep interest in natural sciences. When Powell turned to a young man his ideas became Protestants and his beliefs too, which made him a part of the union for abolition slavery. At the time of civil war he got enlisted into army and in the army he lost his one arm. But the loss of arm didn’t ceased him from being a soldier he later on served the army at champion hill and some other places also.

Later on his life he married a girl named Emma dean in the year 1862. Since his departure from army he took teaching as his career and started teaching geology at the Illinois Wesleyan University however he also served his lecture to the other university of Illinois as well. He was also famous for the armchair boat that he possessed at the time of his voyages and later on it became more popular after the discovery American west. Along with his expeditions he also served as the second director of the USGS.

He traveled a lot in his arm chair in search of some new land he made many journey along the green river and he also made his voyages along with the Utah and the northern Arizona as well.  However he also took the services of Jacob Hamblin and Mormon, which helped him in planning some of the great expeditions of his lifetime.  His trip to the Colorado River is considered as one of the great voyages of Powell. Powell took his last breath on 23rd September 1902. After his death he left a large legacy, which the world will remember for long time and especially the people of America.
