International Credit Union Day 2015 theme is "People Helping People" , 2014 theme is "Local Service. Global Good." and celebrates on 16th October.
The World Council of Credit Unions (WOCCU) celebrates International Credit Union Day on the third Thursday of October, since 1948.
This day is celebrated to honor those who have sacrificed their life for the credit union movement, to acknowledge the efforts of the hard working people in the credit union industry and promote its achievements.
The aim is to raise awareness about the work that credit unions are doing around the world and give members the advantage to get more involved. Credit unions and associations around the world celebrate the day with contests and parades. Every year, WOCCU provide international credit union day material to its member.
World Council of Credit Unions (WOCCU)
On 1 January, 1971 WOCCU was established as an international trade association for credit unions.
Its headquarters is at Madison, Wisconsin, USA. It supports the development of credit unions and financial cooperatives throughout the world by working with regional and national credit associations. WOCCU create awareness of credit unions, helps in exchange of ideas and information about financial cooperatives, it helps government to improve legal regulations for credit unions.
It focuses on:
-Increase access to financial services through participation
-loan services emphasizes on member needs and repayment rates
-financial management systems provide safety and efficiency
-partnerships provide international exchange among credit unions
-access to savings and credit services through micro-enterprise
WOCCU's member includes national and regional credit union associations, cooperative associations and business organizations in more than 100 countries around the world. Its member associations account for about 60,000 credit unions with 190 million members worldwide.
