IELTS General Writing Test


The International English Language Testing System test renders an evaluation of English for those who wish to study or train in English. IELTS is a collaborative effort managed by the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations, British Council and IDP Education Australia. The IELTS test is accepted by many professional organizations in Australia and New Zealand.

The General Training format of the IELTS Test focuses on basic survival skills in panoramic social and workplace contexts. This test is typically for those who are going to English-speaking countries for secondary education, work experience or training programs.

The General Training Writing test has two writing tasks of 150 words and 250 words respectively, to be answered in 60 minutes.

In Task 1, candidates are asked to answer to a situation, for example, by writing a letter, requesting for information or explaining a situation.

In Task 2, the candidates are asked to write an essay in response to a point of view, problem or argument.


The eligibility to qualify for the IELTS General Writing Test is when the applicant scores in the Listening which is of 40 minutes, Reading of 60 minutes, Writing for 60 minutes, and Speaking for 11-14 minutes. The first three modules i.e Listening, Reading, and Writing are completed in one day with no break in between. The Speaking Module can be taken at the liberty of the test center within a week before or after the other modules.


The Requirements for IELTS General Writing Test may vary with the person's capability and proficiency in the English language. Though the applicant is rated on a scale of 1-10 for the IELTS General Writing Test, he/she must at least score a 6 (Band) which makes him/her a Competent User in the language despite some inaccuracies, inappropriateness and misunderstandings.


The preparation for the IELTS General writing test, one can take coaching from any recognized institution which provides them with experienced teachers and trainers on how to prepare and write the test. Preparing at home is also an option where the applicant can search for information and test materials on the Internet.

How to APPLY

To apply for this test, go to your nearest IELTS centre and fill the IELTS Application Form attaching all the required documents and certificates.


IELTS has 48 dates fixed for the test to ensure high levels of quality and security.


This test is scored or ranked in Bands. The minimum score for a candidate to qualify must be a 6 Band overall. The sections of the tests are ranked according to your performance in the test and added to get the total score. The results can be found online or by checking out with the institution you prepared in.
