International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia (IDAHO) 2017 theme is "FAMILIES"
International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia is observed on 17th May every year across the globe. This day is dedicated to bring awareness about the LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender) right violations around the world. The founder of this special day decided to form a committee called IDAHO to work closely for the analysis of underlying issues in different countries and continents. It was also propounded in the event that homosexuality should be removed from the list of International Classifications of Diseases of WHO (World Health Organization). The day has its origin in the remarkable year 2004 when people raised a yearlong campaign against Homophobia, Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia. 24000 individuals participated in the protest with several known organizations like ILGA (International Lesbian and Gay Association), IGLHRC (International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission), Coalition of African Lesbians and World Congress of LGBT Jews. They signed on a deal to support the IDAHO initiatives and efforts.
People celebrate this unique day in several ways. They do a lot of public mobilization to make them aware about the issues related to homosexuality and there are problems like violations, partiality, discriminations and criminal offences. Participating member put great efforts to address all of such issues at global level. It helps LGBT communities to negotiate with governments and media in putting their concerns in an effective manner. The celebrations are very strong in Latin America and Europe though it is observed in most of the countries. Countries having multiple cultures and ethnicities have become the hub for such protests.
This day is marked with numerous activities held in various locations. 17th May has become very popular because of the marches and rallies at an international level. People come at a defined place and share their opinions to deal with the situations. They are taking help of social networking websites also to encourage the maximum participation. They can post their comment without any fear. People from different culture, caste, creed, beliefs try to fight for a common cause. On this day the members collectively make a minute noise with the help of bell, horn, whistle, and trumpet to remember the poor victims of transphobic violence. After that they wave rainbow flag to express their hope for a better future. All the key people from LGBT communities participate actively and give speeches to raise people’s level of awareness related to these issues.
International Day against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia has an important role in the protection of the rights of LGBT communities. This special day has given them a platform to make their voice strong and obvious in front of the Government. Due to this day these communities have been able to put forth their sexual orientation in a positive manner. They can form a group and celebrate 17th May that is symbolic to their freedom, choices and selections. This is the reason it has got so much popularity and positive response from all parts of world.
