HESI A2 Test

What is the HESI A2 Test?

The Evolve Reach (HESI) Admission Assessment Exam (A2) is a nursing school test designed by Evolve Reach. This test is meant for aspiring nurses. In some institutes it is considered as an entrance test to an accredited nursing program. However, in order to become a nurse, passing the HESI A2 is a must. The time allotted for the HESI A2 test is four hours.

Eligibility/ Qualification

Anyone who wants to join an accredited nursing school can take the test. This test is mandatory to become a nurse.


The HESI A2 test comprises of five sections.

  • Anatomy and physiology, biology, and chemistry. There will be 25 questions from each section. Allotted time for this section is 50 minutes.
  • Vocabulary and general knowledge. There will be 50 in this section to be covered within 50 minutes. This section checks whether candidates are good at the vocabulary commonly used in health care and general knowledge.
  • Reading comprehension. This section includes 50 questions to be completed within one hour. There will be tasks such as defining words in context, making logical inferences, and finding the main idea of a passage. All the passages will be related to health.
  • Grammar. This section comprises of 50 questions to be attempted within 50 minutes. This includes questions related to parts of speech, important grammatical terms, and common grammatical errors.
  • Basic math skills. This part also includes 50 questions. In this section candidates will have to solve problems involving basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, fractions, decimals, ratios, proportions, and measurement


Candidates will have to score 80% in order to pass the HESI A2 test. The HESI A2 test scores are valid for two years. Those who fail in the HESI A2 test will have to wait for 60 days to retake the test.
