What is GHSGT?

The Georgia High School Graduation Test in short, GHSGT is designed to test whether Georgia students have learned the necessary academic skills in high school. Based on the performance in the test, students can understand their strength and weaknesses in different subject areas and they can opt for a career that they are best suited for. Students appear for the test when they are in the 11th grade. They can retake the test as many times as they choose, before the end of the final year.

Eligibility / Qualifications

Students who have completed high school education are eligible for the test. It is a compulsory exam to get high school diploma.


An idea about the structure of the GHSGT will help the students prepare for the test well. The GHSGT includes five different tests- writing, English, math, social studies, and science.

The first part of the exam evaluates the student’s writing skill. Students will have to write an essay on an assigned topic, which will be assessed on the basis of the following skills.

  • Organization of thoughts.
  • Complete treatment of the topic by framing good arguments.
  • Vocabulary and style of writing.
  • Use of correct grammar and correct sentence structure

The second part of GHSGT is English test that includes three main parts that checks the student’s reading comprehension skills, writing skills and their skills in literary analysis.

  • Literature
  • Critical thinking
  • Writing

The maths section of GHSGT includes data analysis, measurement, geometry, and algebra.

The social studies part covers areas including American Government/Civics, History of the United States, world geography and world history.

The science section of the GHSGT covers research skills, physical science, and biology.


GHSGT is a pass/fail test. The minimum score to pass the test is 500. Those who fail in the GHSGT can also take the GED exam which is a high school equivalency test.
