Dalai Lama Biography

Tenzin Gyastso is the current Dalai Lama as 14th of the generation. He is also the temporal leader of Tibetan. Dalai Lama was born on June 6th 1935 and is considered to be one of the predecessors. He is also referred as His Holiness Dalai Lama Tenzin Gyastso, well known as the spiritual leader of the Tibetans. Traditionally Dalai Lama is regarded as manifestation of Avalokiteshvara or Chenrezig.

Personal Biography

Dalai Lama was born to a peasant family in the village of Taktser, in the province of Amdo, Tibet. Dalai Lama when born was named as Lhamo Thondup and was fifth among the 16 child the family had. Dalai Lama was six years old when he started his monastic education. He received his doctorate of Buddhist philosophy (Geshe Lharampa Degree) at the age of 25.

Career

Dalai Lama took the charge of the state and government after Tibet was invaded by China in the year 1949. Career line of Dalai Lama is as follows:

  1. On November 17th, 1950 Dalai Lama was appointed as the head of the State and Government of Tibet.
  2. On May 23rd, 1951 China forced Tibet to sign treaty.
  3. On September 1954, Dalai Lama along with some more people went to China to hold peace between the two countries. His delegation was held in Beijing and Dalai Lama had peace talks with the Chinese leaders.
  4. On March 10th in the year 1959 a mass up rising was noticed in Lhasa.
  5. The same year Dalai Lama was forced to leave the country and he went to exile in India.
  6. In the year 1963, Dalai Lama propagated for a democratic constitution to be formed in Tibet.
  7. In 1987, Dalai Lama proposed a Five Point Peace Plan to be formed with China in order to have peace between the two countries.
  8. On 7th March 1989, China imposes a martial law in Tibet.
  9. In 1995, a new Panchen Lama was chosen though Dalai Lama objected for it.
  10. In 1997, a march of independence was lead in Tibet under the leadership of Dalai Lama’s brother.

Achievements & Awards

The sincere efforts of Dalai Lama to provide independence to the Tibetans is recognized in the world. Dalai Lama is fondly called as Man of Peace and thus is awarded by Nobel Peace Prize in the year 1989 for his non violent struggle for liberation of Tibet.
