What is the CUNY Test ?

The City University of New York test is abbreviated as the CUNY Test. The New York City has developed its own test for students who have planned to attend their university. The test is called the CUNY Skills Assessment Program. Through this test, students can prove that they are capable of doing college level work at the CUNY by accomplishing threshold scores in either the ACT, the SAT, or the New York Regents Exam.

The CUNY Skills Assessment Program has three tests- Reading, Writing, and Mathematical Skills.

Reading: The CUNY Assessment Test in Reading is not bound by time and comprises of multiple choice questions. This is a computer-based test, and is designed to measure reading comprehension.

Writing: The CUNY Assessment Test in Writing measures your ability to do college-level writing in English. The purpose of this test is to assess your reading, thinking, and writing skills to find if they are consistent with the educational goals of college-level writing courses, and to estimate your readiness for introductory college courses.

Math: The CUNY Assessment Test in Math is not bound by time. This test is a multiple choice paper based on a computer. This test comprises of four sections, namely; numerical skills/pre-algebra, algebra, college algerba, and trigonometry.


The requirements for a CUNY Test are:

  1. A New York Union Semester Program Application form.
  2. Resume of the applicant
  3. 2 Letters of Recommendations
  4. $70 Application Fee payable to School of Professional Studies CUNY
  5. Official Transcripts from your current college or university.

CUNY Test has separate set of requirements for International Students which as mentioned below:

  1. An International Student Application Supplement
  2. A minimum of 550 marks in the TOFEL paper or an 80 on the computer-based TOFEL test.
  3. A Translation of Official Transcripts.

How to Prepare

A core comprehension study is required if you are planning for a CUNY Test. If the comprehension guide is decided on, a test preparation guide with example questions then this will be a good option. However, you have to have a basic knowledge to prepare for the CUNY Test. An in-depth learning will follow as the next step.

How is the Test Ranked ?

A minimum score of 70 is required for applying to any CUNY college, and a total score of 7 in Writing Test. A minimum score of 30 is required in Numerical and Algebra section.
