Technology, in the present time has a dominant presence in all fields of work, more so in the health-care area.  A substantial part of the health-care workforce is required to operate the equipment essential in managing the health of people.  The International Certification Commission (ICC) provides certification for the Biomedical Equipment Technician (CBET) to ensure that the workforce in this field is well versed in the theoretical as well as the practical knowledge of biomedical equipment technology.  The Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation is responsible for developing the CBET Test.  The CBET Test certification ensures a better paying and secure job, plus enhancements that are based on certification.

Study Areas

The CBET Test includes the following content areas:

  • Anatomy and Physiology-13%
  • Public Safety in health-care places-17%
  • Fundamentals of Electronics, electricity, and solid state devices-17%
  • Medical equipment operation and function-26%
  • Medical equipment troubleshooting-27%

The above fields are the broad content areas, which include several sub-areas like knowledge of organs and their functioning, blood, etc.  Most questions relate to the handling and operation of medical equipment and also real life situations that can confront a biomedical technician.

The CBET Test requires diligent and extensive preparation, taking mock tests and detailed research on all study areas.

The CBET Test is of four hour duration and consists of 150 multiple choice questions.

Eligibility Criteria

Candidates must fulfill any one of the criteria given below:

  • A completed US military biomedical equipment technology program with two years of BMET work experience
  • An Associate degree in biomedical academic program with two full years of BMET work experience
  • An associate degree in electronics Technology with three years of BMET work experience

Study Strategies

The ICC or the Board of Examiners do not issue any study guide but insist on extensive study of the content areas.  The Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation  offers a course, The BMET Evaluation and Review.  Study centers do provide coaching and tips for the Test.  An increasing method of study is the availability of Flashcards which underscore important points.

The CBET Test requires 105 correct answers out of 150, that is 70% score.  If a candidate has not scored the passing percentage, they need to write the exam again after full payment of required fee, there is no limit to the number of times one can appear for the exam.

Candidates who have cleared the exam, receive their scores from PTC and full certification from ICC, and are listed on the ICC Directory of Certificants.  Certification is valid for the year in which the test was written and the succeeding full calendar year.  After that the certificate comes up for renewal.  Certification is extended for another three years  on payment of renewal fees and accumulation of 15 credit points for practice.  Certification can be revoked on failure to abide by the renewal requirements.  In such case, the CBET test has to be attempted again.
