Boryeong Mud Festival 2016

The Boryeong Mud Festival is a festival in South Korea which is held in the town of Boryeong which is located about 200 km from the capital city, Seoul. This annual festival usually takes place in the middle of the summer in the month of July.

The mud is collected from the Boryeong mud flats which are taken to the beach area at Daecheon. The mud is believed to have therapeutic properties due to the high mineral content. This event was actually started as a marketing gimmick by a local cosmetic company which used the mud in its products. This festival is frequented most by the Western population in the area.

History of the Boryeong Mud Festival

  • The Boryeong Mud Festival was started in 1996 by a cosmetic company in an attempt to promote its mud-based cosmetic products.
  • The mud used in the festival is taken from the Boryeong Mud Flats and are supposed to be rich in minerals, germaniums and bentonites which are found to occur naturally in the mud of that region.
  • The festival became popular with western tourists and American army personnel posted in South Korea. A large number of Koreans also participate actively in the festival.
  • There was some controversy created in 2009 with the occurrence of allergies caused by the mud among a group of school children who attended the festival.

Activities During the Boryeong Mud Festival

  • Once the visitors are fully immersed in mud several other activities take place during the festival.
  • Several mud-related activities are carried out such as mud wrestling, mud sliding and one can even indulge in mud swimming in a massive tub of mud.
  • There is a marine mud-training course where visitors can learn how to survive in muddy situations.
  • There is also a street parade and a yatch parade.
  • Other activities include the mud showroom, mud painting, mud massage and mud marathon.
  • Other than mud activities, there is a beautiful beach where one can sunbathe and do lots of swimming.
  • There are 78 islands dotting the area, so for the more adventurous types, there is a lot of exploration to be done.
  • All-in-all, the visitor to the Boryeong Mud Festival has the prospect of getting a totally fulfilling experience from the festival as there are so many fun-filled activities to participate in.
