Sean Astin was the son of artiste Patty Duke. Sean Astin knew in 1994 that his genetic father Michael Tell is a music advertiser and an author who publishes and edits the Jewish newspaper The Las Vegas Israelite. Sean Astin parents’ marriage was cancelled shortly prior to her wedding to John Astin.

Sean Astin graduated from the UCLA with B.A. in English and History (culture and American literature). Sean Astin provides on the Board of Directors of Patrons Association and the Arts Council for Los Angeles Valley College. Sean Astin joined St. Paul Apostle Elementary School and Crossroads High School for the Arts and took part in master classes at Stella Adler Conservatory in Los Angeles.

Sean Astin has the tattoo of Elvis word for "nine", an allusion to his connection in Lord of the Rings. The fact is that his role was one of 9 members of Fellowship of the Ring.
