Lewis took on his initial theatrical role in Drunks, co-starring Dianne Weist, Faye Dunaway and Amanda Plummer. Built around an AA meeting, Richard received rant appraisal as the central character, Jimmy Epstein, an addict combating for his existence. Lewis also got exceptional notices for his small part appearance as an agent in a different film that dealt with alcoholism, Leaving Las Vegas. Furthering his 'indie' credits, Lewis also finished the film Gameday, as Coach Adler, a university basketball trainer whose personal life is in muddle but, on the court and in the locker room, he's bright. Satirically Lewis had, prior in life, encountered some of the same troubles these films deal with and he is frankly honest about them in his book. The equal neuroses and dysfunctions that had been the basis for his successful stage character and produced so much magnificent substance for his comedy wore greatly upon him.

With plenty of other small acting appearances and TV series at his disposal, far and away his much loved was his four year part in ABC’s critically much admired series Anything But Love, co-starring with Jamie Lee Curtis. In 2000, Richard Lewis wrote a book The Other Great Depression, which stated his recovery from alcoholism, and was told that he was not an alcoholic. At 44, Richard Lewis found himself on a gurney in the ER, toxic with alcohol and hallucination from excess drug use. How he got to that point, how he got on the road to recovery, and how he copes with being Richard Lewis moderate on a daily basis are the themes of the very amusing, profoundly frank, stimulating and cynical innovative book, The Other Great Depression: How I’m Overcoming, on a Daily Basis, at Least a Million Addictions and Dysfunctions and Finding a Spiritual (Sometimes) Life.
