James is the son of Robert Mangold, a modest painter and Sylvia Plimack Mangold. And after completing his graduation from the Washingtonville High School, James Mangold joined the California Institute of the Arts movie/video program. At where, James taught diverse arts under the guidance of Alexander Mac Kendrick. For the period of his 3rd year, Mac Kendrick recommended Mangold study at Cal Arts School of Theater as an artist along with his usual movie studies. Don Cheadle was his best friend.Finally James determined to go to Columbia University's movie school, at where James started doing job on Heavy under the assistance of director Milos Forman.

James grew disappointed at the studio, James wrote about a television film and animated feature "Oliver and Company". After few years, Mangold decided to remake himself in New York and also applied to Columbia University's movie school, at where he completed his graduation with an MFA in movie. James developed both Cop Land and Heavy.Working constantly as a feature director and writer since 1995, his independent movie Heavy, achieved the best directing award at Sundance Film Festival.Afterward James directed and wrote Cop Land starring Ray Liotta; Girl, Interrupted, Sylvester Stallone, Harvey Keitel and Robert De Niro, which achieved the Best Supporting Actress Oscar in 1999 for Kate and Leopold; Angelina Jolie, starring Hugh Jack man and Meg Ryan. And for that Jack man was selected for the best actor in the comedy or musical in 2001 and 2003 suspenseful story Identity which starred John Cossack.In the year of 2005, James directed and co-wrote Walk the Line, a movie about a young life of singer-songwriter Johnny Cash and his link with June Carter Cash. And it was selected for Witherspoon and five Oscars won the Actress for her performance as June Carter Cash.
