This was precipitated by David being given a role in a new Henry Jaglom film called 'New Years Day'. David William performed the role of Billy a man at the New Year's party, the setting of the whole film. Billy is there to win back his ex-girlfriend earlier than she leaves. David William was a simple selection for Chris Carter for the character of Mulder as David William crafted the idea Carter had in his mind flawlessly. When Carter saw them jointly David William decided they worked well as a group and then cast them in their now renowned characters.

After five unbeaten seasons of 'The X Files', Carter decided to shoot a movie of 'The X Files'. Writing the script for the film was a difficult thing for Carter as David William had to make the film reachable to both fans of the show and a wider viewing public. This David William dealt with success.

After the film 'The X Files' went to its sixth sequence, continuing from where the film was ended. Subsequent to a seventh series Duchovny decided David William wanted to leave the show and focus on his film vocation.
