Melissa Joan Hart Biography

Melissa Joan Hart, who is popular for enacting title roles in two super hit TV series 'Clarissa Explains It All' and 'Sabrina, the Teenage Witch', was born in New York on April 18, 1976 to Paula and William Hart. While Paula is a producer, talent manager and she agent, William Hart is a clam hatchery worker, entrepreneur, and shellfish purveyor.

The Allman Brothers' song 'Melissa' inspired her parents to rechristen her as Melissa and her middle name Joan was borrowed from her grandmother. She has five sisters, including two step-sisters, and two brothers, of which only one brother is not in the showbiz and the rest earn their livelihood by acting.

Melissa Joan Hart began her career at the age of three when she featured in a bathtub toy commercial. She never looked back and featured in at least 25 commercials before she turned five years old. She did minuscule roles in TV series Kane & Abel in 1985 and an episode of The Equalizer in 1986. Melissa did another role, a lead one, in the Emmy award-recipient TV movie Christmas Snow the same year.

Melissa Joan Hart did a Broadway production 'The Crucible', starring Martin Sheen, in 1989 which helped her in getting the title role in 'Clarissa Explains It All', a Nickelodeon TV series which ran successfully for four years. The comedy show, which revolved around a teenager in everyday situations, not only made she was popular among teenagers in the US but also fetched she got three Young Artist Awards out of the four consecutive nominations.She cut two albums -- 'This is What Na Na Means', which went unnoticed, and a recording of Peter and the Wolf (Sony Classical SK 64079), which got the Parents' Choice award.

After 'Clarissa Explains It All' was over, She enrolled herself in the New York University but could not complete her education as she is a lead role in the movie 'Sabrina, the Teenage Witch'. The movie was later made into a TV series, which completed seven seasons. She did an animated version too in which her sister Emily Hart played the lead role while she dubbed voice for two aunts.Melissa did a minor role in the movie 'Can't Hardly Wait' in 1998. Soon she started shooting for 'Drive Me Crazy', in which she starred along with Adrian Grenier. She requested her friend Britney Spears to do a remix version of her song ''You Drive Me Crazy'', which was added to the movie's soundtrack and became an anthem of sorts.

Melissa Joan Hart also did another movie Rent Control, which was aired on the ABC Family cable network in 2005. Though She was busy with movies, Melissa continued portraying the role in Sabrina the Teenage Witch till 2003 when it came to an end.In between, She also wielded the directorial baton in 1999 with an episode 'Snapshot' in Disney Channel's program 'So Weird'. She also directed an episode for Nickelodeon's 'Taina' in the year 2001.

Melissa Joan Hart married musician Mark Wilkerson on July 19, 2003, in a ceremony in Florence, Italy, which was captured in a TV miniseries 'Tying the Knot', produced by her production company 'Hartbreak Films'. The couple has two sons - Mason Walter Wilkerson and Braydon Hart Wilkerson.Melissa made her directorial debut in movies in 2005 with 15-minute movie 'Mute', which starred her sister Emily. She also directed 'Anger Cage' video for her husband Mark Wilkerson's band 'Course of Nature' in 2007. She is also acted in the movie 'Holiday in Handcuffs', in which Melissa was paired opposite Mario Lopez.
