Tattoo art has become vast and hence different sorts of tattoo needles are also needed to bring out the different tattoo styles and designs. Tattoo artists have their own style and their own choice of needles to provide ink to the tattoo and penetrate neatly through the skin where tattoo has to be applied.
Tattoo art is also a detailed profession and there is a lot of knowledge needed to do it successfully. Of course, a creative hand and talent for designing is needed for every tattoo artist. Other than that the ability to work hygienically and taking basic precautions is must while tattooing. Apart from all this, a good knowledge of tattoo needles and how to use them appropriately is must for a tattoo artist. A lot of people are afraid of getting a tattoo and they can get it done only when they know that they are in professional hands.
The needles are mainly of two types. Liner needles are used to mark the outlines, these are round. Three to nine needles can be used to draw the outline of a tattoo design. Other needles are used for shading and are flat from the tip.
Liner needles are the round tip needles that form the outline of a tattoo and are used together. These needles are welded together so that they can be used simultaneously on the skin. Most tattoo artists use medium sized tattoo needles. Some are very sharp and others are relatively blunt but most commonly used are those that have medium thickness. There can be different sets of liner needles and it is up to the tattoo artist which ones he wants to use. They are usually paired in odd numbers like three, five, seven and nine.
Shader needles are mostly used for shading and are placed in double rows. The thickness of these tattoo needles are almost same as the liner needles but the difference is in the tip. The tip for shader needles is flat. Due to the flat tip, shading needles do not scratch the skin and can cover a lot of surface area without hurting the person much. Double row needles are used when the area being shaded is large. For smaller size tattoos greater precision is needed and hence single row of shader needles is enough.
Flat and round base is a very basic classification for tattoo needles. You get to learn more about different types of needles and their application with experience. Overlapped needles are used where you do not want the needle to penetrate too deep into the skin. This can be used for relatively more sensitive parts of the body. When colors are to be used in a tattoo, bifurcated needles are needed, irrespective of the size of the tattoo. One more type of needle is arc needle which is also used for shading.
