The Notting Hill Carnival was celebrated on the roots of the Notting Hill for the abolition of slavery. The very first carnival was an endeavor to showcase the steel band musicians. When the bands paraded all through the streets of Notting Hill, they drew black inhabitants out on to the streets, remembering them the Caribbean homes they had left behind.
Though the Notting Hill carnival has seen some problems in the past, it is a rather safe event at present. Aside from carnival weekend, Notting Hill is a rather calm area for most of the year. The exemption to this is Saturdays when Portobello Market is crowded with audience hunting all the way through antiques market.
During abolition of slavery, Trinidadians used to perform some parody songs and dances in the streets of Notting Hill.
