Understanding Common and Scientific Names of Flowers

For many centuries flowers are known to occupy a momentous role in human life. Because of their stunning beauty, aesthetic quality and delicacy, the flowers have the power to make every occasion special and inspiring. According to the research study, flowers are considered as the great stress reducers and positive mood enhancers. People often use various types of flowers for different special occasions either as bouquet or for decorative purpose. It is really hard to put together the huge list of all flower names but few of them have special significance in everyday life.

Origin of Flower Names:

In order to understand the origins of modern flowers and identify with their symbolic meanings, knowing the flower names is very important. Whether it is lilies, roses, Chrysanthemums or jasmines, each of them has its own importance and meaning.

  • Scientific names for flowers are created according to rules set by the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature (ICBN).
  • Most of the English flower names are derived from the Latin or Greek words to best identify their species from others.
  • Just like all other species of plants, flowers are also recognized by both Latin and common names. To classify plants, generally people use common names of flowers such as tulip, rose, dandelion, daisy and lily etc according to the language and religion while scientific names are acknowledged throughout the world.
  • The binomial naming system or scientific names of flowers consists of two parts known as genus and species name.  For instance lily with long flowers is expressed as Lilium Longiflorum in Latin.
  • Species names refer to the individual type of plants, while genera name is the classification of next higher level that is almost always a grouping of several closely related species.

Importance of Flower Names:

Even though there are hundreds of myths coupled with flower names, they have become an integral part of our life.  Flowers names occupy a special place and unique identity in all aspects of our religion, tradition and culture.

  • The flower names not only express the symbolic hidden meaning such as hope, love, sympathy or affection but also convey specific phrases as well. Indeed, the unique symbolisms flowers of their names evince all kinds of sentiments and emotions what words cannot express.
  • Most of these names are derived from their color, shape, size and blooming patterns. To distinguish different flowers of the same species the scientific names of the flowers are very helpful.
  • At times, two flowers that look similar may bear the same common name or a single flower specimen may have two different common names within the same region. To avoid this confusion and to identify the resemblance of their features such as form and beauty the scientific flower names are very useful.
