Flower Common Names

Understanding the most familiar flower common names

Flowers are represented by common names and botanical names based on their type, characteristics, and plant species. There are many official groups and subcategories of flower families in the taxonomic hierarchy with many naturally occurring variants within a plant species. Hence understanding the plant name is very important for getting the right flower species for your garden. Even though scientific names are difficult to understand and memorize, it is a wise idea to use these names to recognize the plant species because each flower has a unique and standard format of scientific name.

Is common name acceptable worldwide?

While scientific botanical names are standard worldwide, flower common names have no accurate meaning and vary from one place to another. In fact, many flower types are associated with several common names and hence it becomes difficult to identify the specific flower unless we know the scientific name. Because of the regional differences, people use various local languages to label different common names to the flowers. For instance, a flower species with scientific name Asteraceae has several common names like Aster, sunflower, daisy or composite in different regions. Hence, people rely very less on flower common names while referring to the flower types because of their inaccuracy and confused communication.

Overview of flower common names:

  • Flower common names are not associated with any specific flower species and have no relationship with particular plant specimens. It is very difficult to know the precise characteristics or identification of flowers with the help of common names because they do not have standardized format or rule.
  • In some instances, the same common name refers to several different species instead of a single specific flower. That means some of the flowers with totally unrelated characteristics have the same common name.
  • Unlike scientific names, flower common names refer to some real or imaginary aspect of the plant. These names have originated from visual characteristic of a plant or human name or a small part taken from the scientific name or referring to another plant with the same resemblance etc. Although common names are simple words with easy pronunciation it presents quite a number of problems in everyday life.
