This song was included in a 1942 movie "Holiday Inn" starring Bing Crosby and Fred Berlin. The song bagged the Academy Award for the best song. Later the verse was dropped but the chorus was still retained.
German Christmas history: The Germans celebrate Christmas on December 24.The Christmas in Germany dates back to the era when St Boniface journeyed from England to Germany. In Germany he came across a group of pagans who were worshiping an oak tree. St Boniface couldn't bear the sight of them worshipping an oak tree. He got furious and chopped the tree into pieces. This marked the death of Paganism and Birth of Christianity.
