A watch can be defined as a timepiece or timemachine which can be worn on the wrist of a person, can be kept in the pocket, and can be placed on the table or wall. The function of all theses watches is to display current time. Some watches display additional information like the current day, date, month, and year, although enhancement in features is still going on.
Electronic watches with quartz movements are the cheapest one and do function of timekeeping mainly. The cost of watches become high mainly for their workmanship and asthetic appeal, rest every other functions are quiet similar to affordable watches.
Parts of watches:
Movements of watches: The movements of watches can be categorized as mechanical movements and electronic movements. A movement in the watch can be defined as a mechanism of measuring the passage of time to display the current time. The time displayed by mechanical movements is less accurate than of electronic movements.
Power Sources:
Traditionally, a mainspring was used as a power source for watches. Mechanical watches were power sourced by rewonding them periodically by opening the watch crown. Nowadays, a self-winding or automatic mechanism is provided in automatic watches in the form of rotor to provide power source. Additionally, kinetic powered quartz watches and watches powered by electricity are available in the market.
Display:
Two types of displays are available in the watches:
- Analog: Analog showcases time with the help of minute and secong needle on the numbered dial
- Digital: Digital showcases time in numbered form comprising time, seconds, day and date on the dial.
Types of watches:
- Fashion watches: Watches which are designed to be taken as accessory or jewellery article by the wearer are known as fashion watches.
- Computerized multi-function watches: Watches having applications like calculator, tonometers, altimeter, video, or digital camera are considered computerized watches.
Space travel: Watches designed for astronauts enabled with functions to work on zero gravity and extreme conditions come under the category of space-travel watches.
