With 2012 being the expiry year of the Kyoto protocol, the observations and statistics stand to show that the initiative, which was taken 15 years ago, did not completely achieve what it intended to achieve.
Individually, many of the ratified countries have tried to reduce and some have been successful in cutting the emissions of greenhouse gasses. However, collectively, instead of the intended decrease of 5% from 1997, the studies show that the rate of CO2 emissions have gone up by 35%. The success of few countries has been completely masked by the failures in others. Some feel that Kyoto protocol was a good trial effort and a more forceful step would bring the desired effect.
