Agriculture in France

Because of its rich and fertile soil, France has become one of the world’s largest producers of agricultural products. With support from the government and EU subsidies, coupled with modern technology, there is a thriving agriculture in France, making it one of Europe’s leading agricultural producer and exporter. Agriculture in France has a huge contribution in the country’s economy. With about 730,000 farms, the workforce’s 7% is in the agricultural sector and similar sectors like forestry and fishing.

Agriculture in France distributes products not just locally and regionally, but also worldwide. The export from the agricultural department includes processed foods from wheat, poultry, beef, pork, and dairy products of France. Half of the income of agriculture in France comes from raising livestock. Cattle are raised in the north and west parts of France while goats and sheep are raised in the east and south part of the region. Pigs and chicken, on the other hand, can be raised anywhere. France ranks second in milk production in EU, which produces 23.3 million metric tons of milk in a year. On the other hand, fishing does not contribute much on France’s economy the way agriculture does.

The wine industry in France is recognized worldwide, making French wines one of the most in-demand wines in the world. Rose wines are the locals’ favourite wine, but when it comes to world export, champagne and Bordeaux wines are more popular. Wine can actually be produced in all areas of France, and Alsace, Burgundy, Bordeaux, and Champagne, are well-known wine regions.

Sugar beets are abundant in France, and with 29 million metric tons of production in a year, it makes the country the top producer and exporter of sugar beets in EU. The Paris Basin produces most of the wheat while the fields of Rhone delta are the main source of rice.
