Web site for Long Island house rentals?

Description : A few years ago, I found a house for rent on Long Island through a Web site that cost less than $100 for about 30 days of access and the listings changed on a daily basis, including those listed by owners. (These were regular rentals, not seasonal/vacation rentals.) Any idea if that site still exists and where I might find it?

Answer : http://www.vrbo.com/90579 This is the only one I have been dealing with for the past few years, they are good. I hope this helps you.

Does the land lord have the right to take my security deposit in this situation?

Description : My brother and I rented a house for 3 days off of the website VRBO (vacation rental by owner) that was listed as pet friendly. When i spoke to the landlord on the phone he happened to be on vacation and was not able to send any paper work immediately for us to sign all we had was what was listed on the posting. He told us the nightly rate was $400/night and there was a $200 cleaning fee and a $1000 security deposit. He made arrangements for one of his friends to meet us at the house and we could take care of the paper work. We met the friend and Signed the agreement. Little did we know( and this is the part that is questionable) in the agreement he had his house as not pet friendly. So days after i contact him inquiring about getting my security deposit back. He then went on to say that because we had dogs at the house we were in violation of his agreement and he was keeping the entire $1000 security deposit. He also said that we broke his screen door(which i know for a fact did not happen). He said there was dog hair in his house and that extra cleaning was neccnecessaryside of the $200 cleaning fee). I told him i had no problem paying for extra cleaning and or paying for any damages that we inccincurrede has yet to show an itemized list of extra cleaning or damage. Minutes after speaking with him he changed his website listing from pet friendly in an effort to hide his false advertising. I filed a formal complaint with VRBO and they have the history of his posting. Does this guy have the right to take my security deposit of $1000 dollars? Is this a bait and switch senscenario am seriously considering taking this guy to court because in my eyes this is a total scam.

Answer : The agreement you signed is the binding agreement. You AGREED. Typos on a third party website have no legal bearing on this. You can try taking him to court, but it will come down to the fact that you signed a contract agreeing not to have pets on the property. Because you personally agreed to this it will be almost impossible for you to win.

I have a question about beach rental properties...?

Description : My wife and I wanted to take our family to the Ocean. This is something we have never done as a family. My wife found this site that lists beach rental properties by owner... http://www.vrbo.com/ Using this site, we found a nice rental property and contacted the owner thought the site. The deal is, we are to sign a lease he is emailing us, send the week rental + a $300 security deposit by mail and he will meet us at the property the night we are scheduled to arrive. Now, I am a pretty trusting soul. But my spidey sense says.. HEY DUMMY! Are you really going to send a check for over $1000 to a person you have never met to rent a property you have never seen (other than web pictures) on good faith that he will be there the night your rental is scheduled to begin? Doesn't this sound like the beginings of the "vacation from hell?" On the flip side, this might be perfectly normal and customary. Can someone "in the know" enlighten me?

Answer : http://www.frommers.com/cgi-bin/WebX?128@@.eecf84f Have a look at this link with some info. Play it safe and do not risk your money on something you don't have evidence of that it will work. If you want to do something like that, you should do it with your credit card, because the bank will chase the people if they should steal your money. My best advice is to do a search engine search as follows: "warming vrbo.com" and you'll find loads of links popping up and you can review all the opinions of people and you may very well find you're in a great risk of getting scammed.

Has anyone used Elite Chicago Rentals?

Description : A group of us tried to rent a condo from Elite Chicago Rentals for the weekend of 5/12-5/15. We paid for a 3 bedroom unit in Wrigleyville, it was for 8 of us who were coming to Chicago from all over the US (and even one from Canada). About 48 hours before we were scheduled to check-in we received a call stating that the property had been 'trashed' by the previous renters and would not be available for us. They offered two small 1 bedroom condos as a replacement, which was unacceptable for our group. As they said there were no other properties available we asked for a refund, which we were told we would get within 7-10 business days. As we searched for alternate accommodations, we came across a VRBO listing for the same unit. One of us called and spoke with the unit owner who informed us that the property had not been trashed, but had been rented out on a two year lease and that he no longer had a contract with Elite Chicago Rentals. So it seems that Elite was willing to take our money with no intention of following through with the property we paid for. We have called and emailed Elite Chicago Rentals many times to request the status of our refund, but have never received a call back or an email response (and obviously haven't received the over $1500 we're owed). We are working with the credit card company (a bit tricky as we paid our first amount back in January, outside of the normal 60 day review period) and have filed complaints with the BBB, but I was wondering if anyone out there had any experience with this company or suggestions on who to contact that could possibly help us get someone at Elite to respond with the status of our refund (or even just get the refund processed, they don’t have to call us if we get our money back). Also wondering if anyone out there knew of any other avenues we could use to make sure that this doesn’t happen to anyone else. We aren’t the only people this has happened to. One of us was contacted through a review she posted on Yelp by a person who had the same thing happen to them with a 6 bedroom unit the same weekend our rental was cancelled. That person actually drove by the property they were scheduled to rent and talked to the people renting it (they were also told that their property was ‘trashed’). They were able to get a refund by going directly to the Elite office and yelling until someone cut them a check. In hindsight I suppose we should have done the same thing, but by the time we found alternate accommodations (no easy feat for graduation weekend and Cubs/Cardinals) and made it to Chicago the last thing we wanted to do was further sour our vacation by going to the office (we expected it to be empty). Thanks to everyone for their suggestions! I've contacted the Sun Times people and am drafting a complaint letter to the company. All the info has been very helpful!

Answer : You seem to have good documentation to prove that Elite Chicago Rentals breached a rental contract with you. I think you should find a Chicago lawyer to get you compensated for the damages. He can first write a demand letter, then sue them on your behalf if needed. You can also complain to the various consumer protection bodies for a measure of personal satisfaction, but they don't have the power to force Elite to compensate you. Best of luck to you!

Is there a way around robots.txt to view older cached web pages?

Description : I was scammed on a vacation rental and I need to see the cache of the listing before they edited it. I tried waybackmachine, but got "We're sorry, access to http://www.vrbo.com/234965 has been blocked by the site owner via robots.txt." Is there any way around this?? Basically, I need to see this page: http://www.vrbo.com/234965 Anywhere from mid April 2011 on back. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated and will help me get back my $3000.

Answer : Robots.txt just instructs automated scripts whether or not they should view or index the page. Waybackmachine and other similar services visit websites periodically and take a snapshot and save that snapshot on their own web servers. As for the estate agent when they updated the page the original would be replaced. To see the old version requires that the cache service like Waybackmachine took an image of the page at the time. There is no way to see the old version if no backup was made at the time. Also robots.txt is passive it is not an active form of access restriction. Well behaved web-bots will be coded to obey the robots.txt file but they do not have to, there is nothing at all that physically prevents it. The message you see about robots.txt simply tells you that waybackmachine does not index or cache the site because the site owner would rather they didn't.
