An earthquake of magnitude 5.2 has devastatedthe southern Spanish town of Lorca on Wednesday. Administrative authoritieshave confirmed that at least ten people including a 13 year old child have diedin the quake.
The impact of the tremor was felt allacross the Murcia region, where British emigrant live, starting from Alicanteto Malaga and till Madrid.
The epicenter of the earthquake is said to be Tercia mountain range located nearby Lorca town, where anumber of buildings were damaged including a church belltower of medieval period. According to officials, Spain has not experienced sucha destructive quake in the last 50 years.
The mayor of the town, Francisco Jodar said, "Unfortunately people havedied as a result of cave-ins and falling debris. We're trying to find out ifpeople have been trapped inside the collapsed houses."
At around 5.05pm local time, a quake was felt with a magnitude of 4.4 on theRichter scale and the bigger shock destroyed the town at 6.47pm.
"There was a tremendous roar and the church wassplit in half," said a local resident Catalina Lopez.
