Obamas Volunteer At School To Celebrate Martin Luther King Day

Tuesday, January 18, 2011

To celebrate the Martin Luther King Day holiday in a different way, President Barack Obama volunteered with his family, wife Michelle Obama and his two daughters at a local school on Monday. He tested his talents as a painter while painting dancing fruits on the cafeteria walls. This was to promote awareness against unhealthy junks and encourage healthy eating habits. This way, he also emphasized the importance of extending community service in the USA. Obama, who was joined by his wife mainly in the volunteering service, visited the middle school early in the day. For the first lady, it has been a part of her fighting childhood obesity cause which has been one of her most prominent issues she is fighting for since coming to the White House.

The apple that Obama painted was a cartoon character flexing its muscles.

He told the reporters, “After a painful week where so many of us were focused on tragedy, it’s good for us to remind ourselves what this country is all about.” He certainly referred to the tragic shooting in Arizona that killed six people and wounded 13, including a U.S. congresswoman. He felt that these kind of activities are much needed to remind the US people about the true values of humanity and the country.

He later added, “This kind of service project is what’s best in us and we’re thrilled with everybody who is participating.” The day also turned Mrs. Obama 47. She was greeted with a version of “Happy Birthday” after she entered the cafeteria. She was seemingly touched, but a little embarrassed as well. She said, “All right let’s get to work. This is embarrassing.”
