About Bolivian boliviano Currency

Special facts about Bolivian Boliviano

Bolivian boliviano is the official currency of Bolivia and it can be subdivided into 100 subunits which are known as centavos. The ISO 4217 code for Bolivian Boliviano is BOB. Before the introduction of Bolivian Boliviano in 1990¸ the official currency of Bolivia used to be Bolivian peso (BOP). However¸ significant inflation led to conversion of the Bolivian peso to boliviano at a ratio of one million to one. Before the Bolivian peso had come to practice¸ there was an older boliviano in circulation between 1864 and 1963. The Bolivian peso replaced it in the year 1963.

Bolivian Boliviano Coin Types

After years of rampant inflation¸ the Bolivian peso got replaced by boliviano in 1987. During that time¸ the new boliviano that was introduced was roughly equal to the value of 1 U.S. dollar.

The coins that were introduced in 1988 were 2¸ 5¸ 10¸ 20 and 50 centavo struck in stainless steel. A stainless steel 2 boliviano followed in the year 1991. The 10 centavo coins started to be cast out of copper-plated steel instead of stainless steel in 1997. Bi-metallic 5 bolivianos were also issued in 2001. The 2 and 5 centavo coins are no longer to be found in circulation.

There are two legal sizes in which the 2 boliviano coins are minted. The smaller 2 boliviano coin resembles the 1 boliviano coin. That however¸ leads to a bit of confusion though the 2 boliviano coins are undecagonal while the shapes of the 1 boliviano coins were round.

Bolivian Boliviano Banknote Types

In 1987¸ the Bolivian pesos that were in circulation were overprinted with denominations in centavos and bolivianos and provisional issues of 1¸ 5¸ 10 and 50 centavos¸ and 1¸ 5 and 10 bolivianos were introduced. However¸ the Bolivian Boliviano regular issues were introduced in the same year in denominations of 2¸ 5¸ 10¸ 20¸ 50¸ 100 and 200 bolivianos. The 2 boliviano note was replaced by 2 boliviano coin in 1991¸ while the 5 boliviano note got replaced in 2001. However¸ the 5 boliviano note is still listed as in circulation by the Bolivian central bank. At present the banknotes prominently in circulation are 10¸ 20¸ 50¸ 100¸ and 200 bolivianos.
