The world's first Xeriscape Garden was created, based on the 7 principles of Xeriscape at the Denver Botanic Gardens in 1986. Denver Water employees, Colorado are believed to have coined the term xeriscape. These unique water-conserving landscapes, drought-tolerant landscaping is also referred to as zeroscaping, and smart scaping .Certain types of plants are used which naturally adjust to the requirements of the local climate. Meticulous planning and good care is taken to avoid losing water owing to evaporation and run-offs. Gardeners were encouraged to learn that this concept and implement in countries which might have limited supply of water.
Pathways and paved areas are hard landscape features of a Xeriscape Garden. Lawns are minimized as they are water guzzlers thriving on water. Turf areas should be designed for easy mowing and manicure. Instead of sharp turns, curved swathes act as a suitable substitute. Distribution of water will be difficult if the swathes are narrow. Water directed straightaway to the base of the plant can be done with time saving soaker hoses and drip irrigation systems. Plants which do not need water to survive; and have same water needs, always group them together. Drought tolerant plants have leaves that are small, thick, glossy, silver-grey or fuzzy, they have water storage capacity. The garden has to be divided into watering zones; organic material in the soil has to be well aerated. Sandy soil which drains perfectly must have compost as a deal organic additive, including succulents and cacti.
Xeriscaping and xerogardening eliminates the need for potent supplemental of water from irrigation. Ideal for regions with inaccessible, reliable supplies of fresh water, it is popular in areas with climate patterns shift. Mulching, a technique of Xeriscaping helps soil retain moisture. Composted leaves, coarse compost, bark, wood chips or gravel are used to cover the surrounding area of the root. Mulch stabilizes soil temperature, protects roots of plants from excessive heat and retains moisture.
