What is Pancreas Transplantation?

Pancreas transplantation is a type of organ transplant which involves transfer of healthy pancreas from a healthy donor to a patient suffering from extreme type I diabetes. Pancreas is an important organ of the body that performs digestive functions. Hence unlike other transplantations, the original one of the patient is left as it is and the new one is placed at another location in the body. There are 4 types of pancreas transplantation: Only pancreas transplant, Simultaneous pancreas-kidney transplant (SPK), pancreas after kidney transplant (PAK) and Simultaneous deceased donor pancreas and live donor kidney (SPLK).
