What is Cochlear Transplantation?

Also called as cochlear implant, this is a procedure to cure complete or severe hearing loss. The procedure involves attaching a device in the inner part of the ear known as cochlea which is the part that processes sounds and enables hearing. The cochlea resembles the shell of a snail with 3 fluid filled chambers. When the membranes of this region are damaged, hearing loss occurs. Unlike the hearing aids which amplify sounds, cochlear transplants process the sounds to enable hearing.
